The British summer weather is always unpredictable, but this afternoon, the sun made a very welcome appearance just in time for a wonderful community milestone.
Today marked the official opening of the Benfieldside Community Garden in Consett. This fantastic initiative, driven by the local charity Building Self-Belief , was launched with a special visit from Dame Sue Snowdon, who officially opened the garden.
Building Self-Belief does incredible work across the North East, focusing on improving the wellbeing of young people and providing them with the support needed to build their self-belief. This new community garden is a tangible extension of that mission, creating a space that brings people together and provides a lasting asset for the local area.
Collaboration in Action
As part of the local business and charity network, it was a privilege to attend the launch and witness the immense support for this project firsthand. The turnout from residents, supporters, and local organisations highlighted exactly why community-led initiatives are so vital.
The afternoon was also an excellent opportunity to connect with some of the driving forces behind youth and community support in our region:
Building Self-Belief: It was wonderful to catch up with Christine Thomas from BSB and celebrate the culmination of the hard work that went into making this garden a reality.
NE Youth: We also caught up with John Niblo from NE Youth, another brilliant local charity dedicated to supporting and empowering young adults across our area.

A community garden is more than just a collection of plants and green spaces. It represents collaboration, a shared purpose, and a safe environment for people to connect, learn, and grow. For the young people involved with Building Self-Belief, projects like this provide practical experience, a sense of ownership, and a direct connection to their local community.
