Our bite-sized business growth programme with a big impact!

If 2020 taught us anything it was to always expect the unexpected.  As we move from survive to thrive in 2021, we need to focus our business resilience and be able to seize new opportunities when they arise.

In addition to our growing If you have a small business, we’d like to help you to get your business fit for the future with a series of bite-size workshops packed with expert help and support delivered by local small business owners.  It’s open to eligible small business in County Durham and we’re giving our DBN members first opportunity to sign up as places are limited.

About our programme

This fully-funded programme delivering in partnership with with RTC North offers goal-based growth support to businesses based in County Durham looking to move their business forward at different stages of their growth journey.

With practical mentoring, workshops, business growth advice and opportunities across our local support network, we can help you to get your business Fit For the Future.

We’ll be delivering the programme in bite-size online mentoring sessions, offering invaluable advice, guidance and support.  And like any fitness programme, it will be challenging and will help you to reach new heights in 2021.  During and between each bite-sized session we’ll ask you to carry out a task that puts your new (or newly-polished) skills into action.

How it works

From 9th February until 2nd March, we’ll meet online every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9:00 –11:00 (apart from 16 Feb) for hands-on business growth skills, mentoring and advice.  It’s open to all eligible businesses in County Durham.

All the workshops are interactive and engaging and designed for micro and small businesses.  We guarantee you will learn new skills and gain confidence to manage your business better and more profitably.

To make it all happen we need at least 12 DBN members to sign up so please go for it!  Everyone will get a personal business fitness plan at the end of the programme.

Can’t make every date?  Don’t worry, we’ll be recording each session and making them available on a catch-up basis for our course members.  But you must try to attend as many sessions as possible please!  They only work with lots of input and sharing ideas.

During each session we’ll be giving you a unique opportunity to collaborate and share knowledge with others in the programme.

Workshop 1: Focus on you! – Tuesday, 9th February – 9:00 – 11:00 – Stress busting for busy business owners with Gillian Fortune

As a passenger you wouldn’t want an airline pilot to turn up for work tired, stressed and preoccupied with lots of issues would you?  You are the pilot of your own business and you need to be in great shape to make it fly.  We’ll be dealing with stress and workload, change, taking time out and clearing your thoughts and boosting your energy.  Gillian Fortune, the No-Nonsense Stress Buster, will share her proven techniques that really work.

Workshop 2: Lose wasteful activities – Thursday, 11th February – 9:00 – 11:00 – Presenters: John Heslop and Jim Barr – Shape up your business to drop a “waste” size...

Let’s get lean!  Most of us spend parts of our working day doing unprofitable and unrewarding tasks when we’d really like to be getting on with taking our businesses forward and giving our customers a great experience.  In this bite-size workshop we’ll help you to identify and ditch those unprofitable activities, obsolete products and services and then put your energy into taking your business forward.  With more time and less clutter, you’ll have time to develop new products and services, do things better and increase your capacity for profit as well as job satisfaction.  Whether you are starting up or ambitiously growing your business you’ll benefit from ditching those unrewarding tasks and focusing on activities that add real value.  We’ll help you to move your business forward in 2021. 

Workshop 3: Make online really work for you – Thursday, 18th February – 9:00 – 11:00 – Presenter: Melanie Cant – It’s time for your digital makeover

Your online presence has never been more important than it is at present.  But what does is communicate about your business?  How easily can customers and visitors see the benefits of choosing your business?  Are you geared up for online retail and payment?

We’ll be giving you all the skills and knowledge to carry out an online business makeover and create a template you can use to keep your content fresh and relevant and give your customers a great experience.  Let’s take a fresh look at our businesses online and learn how to make them stand out from all the digital “noise”.

Workshop 4: More sales and more customers – Tuesday, 23th February – 9:00 – 11:00 – Presenters: Mags Bradshaw & Gary Scott – Finding and winning new customers starts today!

Selling really matters and you are about to win a new customer today!  We’ll show you how to do it and invite you to give it a go immediately after the session.  We’ll give you some simple steps to enter new markets in 2021 that will help to take your business in a new direction.  You’ll discover how to find new customers and markets, break the ice and reach out to them.

You can also grow your business by collaborating with others.  Collaborating with other like-minded businesses will enable you to deliver more to your customers.  We’ll show you how to find new business partners through networking and we’ll be working together as a team during the workshop to prove it works!

Workshop 5: Build your brand with clear communication – Thursday, 25th February – 9:00 – 11:00 – Presenters: Gillian Fortune and Melanie Cant – Be a confident brand ambassador

Can you confidently talk about your business to others?  We’ll show you how to do it including what to include and what to leave out.  How you talk about your business can win new customers or drive them away in droves!  Anyone can learn the skills to talk with confidence about their business, it just takes time and practice and we’ll show you how.  Be a brand superstar with a little help from Gillian and Melanie.

Workshop 6: Your business plan for 2021 – Tuesday, 2nd March – 9:00 – 11:00 – Presenters: Gary Scott and Melanie Cant – From survive to thrive! Setting meaningful business goals for 2021

When we set up our businesses there’s no instruction manual to help us.  Imagine having a clear plan that shows what currently works and what you could put your energy into to help your business thrive?

In this final workshop we’ll tie together all the knowledge you have gained over the previous sessions and we will build your personalised (and achievable) plan to help you and your business to be truly Fit For The Future.

How easy is it for your customers to find the products and services they are looking for and how easy is it for them to buy from you?

Here's how it works.  We invite a couple of our members to meet with you online to chat about what you want your website and social media to do for your business.  Over a few days they will visit your website and media pages as "shoppers" and then give you constructive feedback about what works and what could be even better.  We have a checklist of things to look for so it is consistent no matter who carries it out.

Please let us know if you would like us to check out your website or the social media pages you sell from and we'll set up an online meeting between you and your two "shoppers" so you can chat about what you need from your customer experience healthcheck.  Drop us an email at connect@dobusinessnetwork.com.
