Collaboration in Action: Bridging Cultures and Building Self-Belief

Networking is often viewed through the lens of lead generation, but its true value lies in the meaningful partnerships that emerge over time. A prime example of this is the ongoing collaboration between two of our members: Noriko Matsubara (Noriko Art) and Christine and Peter Thomas (Building Self-Belief).

Now in its second year, this partnership demonstrates how connecting local expertise with charitable initiatives can create enriching experiences for the community.

A Fusion of Art, Culture, and Wellbeing

Building Self-Belief, led by Christine and Peter Thomas, is a charity dedicated to improving the wellbeing of young people. By providing a supportive environment, they help individuals navigate challenges and develop a stronger sense of self.

Through connections made at networking meetings, Noriko Matsubara—an accomplished artist, author, and illustrator—joined forces with the charity to deliver a series of Japanese art, culture, and language workshops. Designed for young people aged 8–12 at the Youth Club, these sessions offer more than just creative output; they provide a window into a different world.

Knowledge Exchange and Global Curiosity

The impact of these workshops is multifaceted. Supported by funding from the Japan Foundation in collaboration with Newcastle University, the programme introduces students to:

  • Language and History: Gaining a foundational understanding of Japanese heritage.

  • Geography and Nature: Exploring the unique landscapes and seasonal traditions of Japan.

  • Hands-on Art: Developing fine motor skills and patience through weekly origami sessions.

Noriko’s expertise allows the children to explore diverse themes—from traditional food to natural history—sparking a genuine curiosity about global cultures. For many of these young people, these sessions represent their first formal introduction to international cultural exchange.

The Power of Local Partnerships

This collaboration highlights the importance of the Do Business Network ecosystem. When professionals like Noriko, Christine and Peter share a space, the result is a project that leverages high-level academic and international funding for the direct benefit of local youth.

The success of these workshops over the past two years serves as a testament to what can be achieved when we look beyond the initial introduction and focus on how our skills can complement the missions of our fellow members.
