Member Spotlight: How Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club Found a Community, Not Just a Network

When we talk about networking, it is easy to focus on the exchange of business cards. However, for Rob Richardson and the team at Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club (DRSC), DBN membership has proven to be about much more than just a monthly meeting.

Rob recently shared some feedback regarding his experience with the network, and his perspective perfectly captures why we do what we do.

Moving Beyond Modest Expectations

Like many organisations, DRSC joined DBN with modest expectations. They were looking to connect with the local business community, but what they found was a level of genuine support that went far beyond a standard membership.

"We joined with modest expectations," Rob says. "What we got was genuine support and real collaboration, particularly when seeking support for our key annual events."

From a Conversation to Enhanced Accessibility

A perfect example of this collaboration in action happened when Rob met the Consett Rotary Club at a DBN meeting.

This connection led to the Rotary Club volunteering to manage the car park at the Sailing Club’s open day last year. Their support was instrumental in helping the club raise vital funds, all of which were reinvested into a new accessible boat.

A Two-Way Street

The strength of DBN lies in mutual support, and Rob has been a fantastic advocate for this. Beyond the support the club has received, Rob has consistently looked to the network first when he needs services, passing on countless pieces of business to other DBN members.

This is the "doing" side of networking—a simple introduction at a meeting directly resulting in more people being able to enjoy time on the water, while also strengthening the local economy.

Actions Over Conversations

One of the most common frustrations for business owners is joining a group that feels like all talk and no action. Rob highlighted that the real value of DBN lies in the fact that members actively show up for one another.

As Rob puts it: "DBN is a truly supportive network that delivers real value, not just conversations. We are so pleased to be a member of such a dynamic business networking group."

Join Us at the Reservoir

If you want to see this collaboration in action, there is no better opportunity than our upcoming Summer BBQ on Wednesday 15th July, hosted by Rob and his team at the Sailing Club.

It is a chance to experience the DRSC hospitality firsthand, meet people like Rob, and see for yourself how a supportive local network can make a difference to your business and the wider community.
