How a Chance Introduction at DBN Led to Corporate Sponsorship for Blue Spirit

One of the most rewarding aspects of running a business community is watching organic connections grow into something that makes a tangible difference. A fantastic example of this happened recently right here at the Do Business Network.

Earlier this year, Carol Smith, representing local charity Blue Spirit, attended a DBN meeting. Because of the collaborative nature of our community, she was introduced to Mary Jallow from Utility Warehouse (UW).

During their conversation, Mary shared more about UW's structured commitment to supporting the third sector. Utility Warehouse has a strong track record of working closely with charities, acting as vital connectors and providing sustainable avenues for support. Recognising a great opportunity, Carol took this information back to the Blue Spirit trustees.

About Blue Spirit

For those in our community who may not yet be familiar with Blue Spirit, they are a registered charity dedicated to supporting young people aged 14 to 25 who are experiencing mental health challenges or facing social and economic disadvantage.

Established in memory of Laury Gratiet, Blue Spirit enables young people to access the open space of the sea through subsidised sailing experiences. From dinghy sailing to residential voyages, these opportunities provide a vital boost to wellbeing, helping young people leave day-to-day stresses behind, build confidence, and develop essential life skills.

In another wonderful DBN connection, Blue Spirit was previously introduced to Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club through our community, and they now regularly hold sailing days there, bringing these life-changing experiences right to our local waters.

Finding Common Ground

This story isn't about massive commercial contracts. Instead, it demonstrates the deep level of support available within our community, regardless of whether you are a limited company, a sole trader, or a registered charity. When people sit down and genuinely talk, there is always common ground to be found and a way to support one another.

Following those initial discussions, Blue Spirit and Utility Warehouse formalised a partnership, and UW is now officially recognised as a corporate sponsor on the Blue Spirit website.

Making a Tangible Difference

This corporate sponsorship provides important funding that allows Blue Spirit to continue increasing the number of young people they provide services to. In the charity sector, having this kind of reliable business backing is incredibly valuable for planning ahead and expanding reach.

This success story is a perfect example of what happens when local organisations come together. UW’s dedication to community investment, combined with Mary and Carol's proactive conversation, shows that networking is about building relationships that strengthen the wider North East community.

We are delighted to have played a small part in bringing Carol and Mary together, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact this support will have on the young people Blue Spirit serves.

Share the News: The Blue Spirit trustees and youth board are actively promoting this wonderful milestone. We encourage our fellow DBN community members to share this story and help spread the word about the vital work being done in our region.
