Networking is about more than just an exchange of contact details; it is about building a foundation of trust and professional credibility within our local community. Whether you are a seasoned attendee or a new face in the room, these principles will help you cultivate meaningful connections.
Be Prepared: Business Cards and QR Codes
While the conversation is the most important part of the meeting, providing a simple way for people to follow up is essential. Ensure you have physical business cards or a digital QR code ready. This simple act of preparation shows you are professional and makes it effortless for potential collaborators to reach out after the event.
Listen First: Your Networking Superpower
The most effective networkers aren't necessarily the loudest; they are often the best listeners. By focusing on what others need, you demonstrate expertise through your ability to understand and solve problems. When you listen intently, you gain the insight needed to offer genuine value, rather than just a sales pitch.
Consider a Small Presentation
Taking the opportunity to deliver a short presentation to the room is a highly effective way for everyone to get to know you and your business faster. Sharing your story or a specific piece of advice helps establish your expertise and opens up immediate opportunities for deeper conversations later in the meeting.
The 24-Hour Follow-Up
Networking doesn’t end when the meeting closes. Aim to reach out to your new connections within 24 hours while the conversation is still fresh. A simple message on LinkedIn or a quick email to say it was a pleasure to meet them reinforces your reliability and keeps the door open for future collaboration.
Consistency is Key
Trust is built over time. Regularly showing up to meetings allows you to deeply understand your fellow members' businesses and, importantly, allows them to understand yours. Consistency proves your reliability and ensures that when a referral opportunity arises, you are the first person who comes to mind.
Relax and Connect
Authentic business relationships are built on rapport, not pressure. Avoid being pushy or treating every introduction as a closing opportunity. DBN is a space for mutual support; focus on being helpful and approachable. A simple smile goes a long way in making you the person people want to do business with.
Identifying Our Community: The Lanyard System
To help everyone navigate the room with ease, we use a simple colour-coded lanyard system:
Orange Lanyards: Worn by our DBN members.
Yellow Lanyards: Worn by our guests.
If you are a member, please look out for those wearing yellow. Taking a moment to say hello to "newbies" ensures everyone feels welcome and included from the moment they arrive.
We Are Here to Support You
If you feel shy or nervous about attending, please know that you don't have to navigate the room alone. We are always here to help you feel more comfortable. If it would help, ask to be buddied up with a regular member who can introduce you to the group.
Please let us know what we can do to make your networking experience more comfortable; your inclusion and confidence are our priority.
