THE LAND OF OAK AND IRON - DECEMBER 2025

The Land of Oak and Iron is proud to host a wide range of wonderful events and activities, from exciting seasonal children’s trails and school holiday activities, to music events, creative workshops and heritage talks.

Dates: Wednesday, 5th November 2025 - Sunday, 4th January 2026 - 9:00-16:00

Venue: Land of Oak and Iron Heritage Centre, Spa Well Road, Winlaton Mill, Blaydon-on-Tyne, Northumberland, NE21 6RU

This exhibition showcases and celebrates the achievements of the Land of Oak & Iron Wednesday painting group, based here at the Heritage Centre.  This is their third annual exhibition in our Inside Out Gallery.

The Wednesday acrylic painting sessions have been led by local artist, Katherine Rodger since 2021 and are now a regular weekly activity, open to everyone from the complete novice to the experienced painter.

All the paintings you see here in the exhibition have been produced by amateur painters, many of whom had never tried acrylic painting before, while others have become more accomplished through the course and own practice.

Encouraging participants to find their own style and develop techniques which suit their own artistic individuality has been a key aim of the sessions. Friendship and mutual support have made them so much more than a mindful activity for a weekday afternoon.

This year’s artists are Marian Shilston, Christina Kay, Heather Stone, Laura Frederiksen, Lyndsey Blake and Sue Hill.

“We hope you enjoy viewing a selection of the art group’s paintings as much as we’ve all enjoyed producing them.”

The art exhibition is visible from our Courtyard to the rear of the Heritage Centre in our ‘Inside Out Gallery’.  All artworks are available to purchase - please speak to a member of our team.

The Biking Santas are hiding Christmas Magic Keys across Land of Oak & Iron, including here at the Heritage Centre!

There are over 300 keys to be found in the run up to Christmas, most of them will be hidden around the Consett end of the Land of Oak & Iron area - but there will be 5 keys sponsored by Land of Oak & Iron to be found here at the Heritage Centre in Winlaton Mill!

We will pop something on our social media pages to let you know when The Biking Santas have been and hidden each key here, so keep a check on our Facebook and Instagram pages!  Our first Magic Key will appear on the afternoon of Friday 28th November.

You can see The Biking Santas performing on the steps of Christ Church in Consett, on Saturday 29th November, 11.30am when a number of Magic Keys will be hidden!  All proceeds from the Magic Key sponsorship goes to a charity close to their hearts Brain Tumour Research - so if you see the Biking Santas please pop some coins in their donation box.

We would love to hear from you if you find a Magic Key - please tag us on our social media pages with a photo @landofoakandiron

Come and meet artist Valentina Short at the Heritage Centre for the last of this year’s ‘Meet the Maker’ events.

Since moving to Ryton in 2019 and after a long career in the NHS as a mental health nurse, Valentina now enjoys retirement and has re-found her passion for painting.

Painting in acrylics, Valentina is inspired by modern Scottish landscape artists and the rugged Northumberland Coastline.  An acute observer of the natural world, Valentina is fascinated by the essence of stormy weather and loves trying to capture how the skies and seas around the North East of England make her feel.

A selection of Valentina’s paintings are available to purchase for a short 2-week period in our Heritage Centre shop from Friday 28th November, or directly from Valentina on her Meet the Maker Day (Saturday 13th December, 10:00-16:00), where you can ask questions about her travels and inspiration, browse, purchase and say hello to the artist herself.

After a brief chat about how to ‘reduce, re-use, recycle’ over the festive season, we will be making Christmas wreaths out of scrap fabric, plus re-useable crackers.

This one is for adults and all resources will be provided.

This is great fun and it’s free to attend - you just need to book a place as there are limited spaces available.
