THE LAND OF OAK AND IRON - AUGUST 2025

Land of Oak & Iron is the perfect place to take your 4 legged friends for a walk - our Heritage Centre is dog friendly and we even have a doggie treat menu too!

To celebrate our 4 legged visitor friends, we are organising this event especially for them (and their human folk).   Join us in and around the Courtyard for our fun Dog Show at 1.30pm - there are different categories such as best dressed dog, best smile, dog most like their owner and best trick along with an award for the best in show.  Book your tickets below.  Online booking closes Friday evening, so be quick (limited places available to book on the day)

We will also have some doggie themed stalls, including tasty baked goodies from David’s Dog Deli, dog accessories, toys and pet food from Mammies Biscuit Dog Bakery, pet portraits with Lavinia Hunter, dog photography with Gayle Hall Dog Photography and cool denim dog coats and accessories with Bad Bones & Bows!

Bryson’s Animal Shelter will be joining us too, supporting animals in need in the North East.

Trick for a Treat: Ask your pooch to do a paw shake or trick for one of team members, to be rewarded with a little doggie treat! Don’t forget to book your pooch into one (or more) of the dog show categories!  We would love to see photographs or films of your pooch at the Heritage Centre – so please upload to our Facebook page and say hello.

Come and meet artist Sue Moore at the Heritage Centre for another of this year’s ‘Meet the Maker’ events.

“The dogs in this collection have amused me, inspired me and given me great pleasure as I’ve worked on them.

After painting my own dog, I did some commissions before creating these casual, quirky “dapper dergs”. They’ve allowed me to explore what happens when paint and dogs collide in a light-hearted way”.

A selection of Sue’s original artworks will be available to purchase for a short 2-week period in our shop from Friday 8th August, or directly from her on the Meet the Maker Day on Sunday 24th August, where you can browse, purchase some of Sue’s unique artwork.

Join print artist Marcia Ley for this fascinating workshop learning to print from nature using ‘Gelli’ plates.

Gelli plates are a great way to experiment with mono-printing techniques, building up layers of colours (or keeping it simple with just 1 colour).  It’s really fun to do and requires no prior experience of printmaking – creating really beautiful prints using nature and other bits n’ bobs to create unique patterns and textures in your prints.

In the session you will experiment with mark making using a range of textured materials, leaves and feathers on your printing plate. There will be different coloured inks and papers to print on – so each print you create will be truly unique.

It can get a little bit messy, so wearing an  apron is recommended!

Tickets £38 including all materials and a cup of tea/coffee to enjoy during the workshop.

Our creative workshops often sell out quickly, so please reserve your place as soon as possible to avoid missing out.  Booking essential.

Please note - tickets for our workshops, sessions and courses are non refundable.  We may at our discretion transfer your ticket to another similar event.

Our live music and food evenings are back at the Heritage Centre! Join us for an entertaining evening of fantastic live music and food on the last Friday of every month.

The band started in Rowlands Gill in 2022, and comprises tenor saxophone, guitar, piano, bass and drums.

“We love to share our enjoyment of jazz with various audiences, and perform regularly at The Staiths café and Gibside.”

Café: Our Chef will be rustling up some delicious food for the evening, with our Café serving hot and cold drinks, with sweet treats available to purchase and enjoy alongside the live music.

No need to book, just turn up for a great evening between 6pm – 9pm (last food order 8.30pm). Get here early to grab a seat, order your food and settle in for a great evening of live music.
