BIG CHANGES FOR SMALL BUSINESSES: WHAT THE GOVERNMENT'S NEW PLAN MEANS FOR YOU

The UK Government has launched a new Small Business Plan that it hopes will unlock the full potential of the country’s 5.5 million small and medium-sized enterprises.

Called “Backing Your Business”, the plan sets out a multi-year strategy aimed at helping SMEs grow, boost productivity, and navigate a smoother path to success.

Here’s what it means for you:

  • Faster payments and less paperwork - New legislation is targeting late payments - the toughest crackdown in the G7 - and aims to reduce regulatory admin costs by 25%.

  • More funding at every stage - From Start-Up Loans to growth guarantees and export finance, new schemes are opening up clearer, fairer access to capital.

  • Support for the high street and hospitality - Expect permanent business rate relief, rental reforms, and simplified licensing - helping you thrive locally.

  • Future-proof skills and tech adoption - More support is coming for apprenticeships, leadership training, and adopting the latest digital tools.

  • Streamlined help when you need it - A new Business Growth Service is being rolled out to make it easier to find the right support, especially for under-represented founders and exporters.

Why it matters:
SMEs power over half of the UK’s private sector jobs. This plan is all about helping you do what you do best - grow, hire, innovate, and succeed.
